Hi Niis, pleasure to listen to your ramblings (as always)…
On would I be Sky Blue without pressured influence – here’s my story:
When I was a real youngster back in the 70’s I liked football but wasn’t passionate about it. Liverpool were in their pomp, winning league titles & European trophies, so I supported them without really knowing where the city of Liverpool was (let alone that it had another team in Everton – I had no clue where they played!)
But my best mate at school in Bedworth was a lad called Rob Gurney. My mate Rob (the very same as has made his career from writing & broadcasting on everything Sky Blue) told me I should really support my local team. I succumbed to the peer pressure of young Mr Gurney at the age of ten…
I got my Dad, under sufferance, to take me to Highfield Road a few times [Dad felt that football had gone awry when the maximum wage had been scrapped…!]
Then on a bitterly cold December day I watched from the East End/Kop of HR as Nicky Platneur scrambled a goal and wee Terry Gibson added three more as the Sky Blues annihilated the mighty Reds.
My birthday present the following year was a junior season ticket to lovely old Highfield Road.
Best regards
Robbie
